What a whirlwind the past week has been for me. I left for Scottsdale, AZ for the PRSSA Leadership Rally on June 1, returned to Atlanta on June 6, left for NYC for the PRSA Leadership Rally on June 8 and returned to Atlanta on June 10. Needless to say, it was a great week all around and I continue to learn so much from our PRSSA and PRSA leaders.
PRSSA LR in Scottsdale is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s when PRSSA Chapter Presidents arrive in AZ to learn more about PRSSA, to connect with other leaders and to plan for the upcoming year.
I know I had a great time learning and talking with our PRSSA Chapter Presidents and leaders in AZ and we got a lot of great feedback from all the sessions and events.
Brandi Boatner, past PRSSA President, and I led a session on diversity in Chapters discussing the importance of diversity in Chapters and the importance of referencing our Diversity Toolkit.
Diversity is what makes us different and everyone might not always realize how diverse they are or your Chapter is. Here are some things that make us diverse:
- Sexual Orientation
- Background and culture – where we were raised, how we act, etc.
- Ancestry and heritage
- AND MORE
As Brandi and I discussed – diversity isn’t just about race, it’s about a lot more.
For our Chapters diversity is important because not everyone will be a PR major and not everyone will want to learn about social media. Everyone is different and wants to learn about different things.
The best way to gauge diversity in your Chapter is a simple survey at the beginning of the semester asking your members what they want out of the year, asking them about their majors/minors and other related questions. It will really help your Chapter plan for the yer. Use your Chapter members’ diversity qualities as strengths for your Chapter.

Another hot topic at Rally was leadership and leadership styles.
This keynote session with Cathy Planchard, APR, of Allison + Partners really helped me understand my leadership style and the leadership styles of the National Committee and other leaders I’ve worked with in the past.
It’s important to know others’ leadership styles to know how to best accommodate them, to familiarize yourself with their learning styles and to learn how they might deal with stress.

After the Chapter Presidents left, the National Committee arrived and we had a great few days going over everyone’s platforms and goals for the year. We have a strong, strategic Committee this year and I can’t wait to see what all we are going to accomplish for our members.
Fast forward: PRSA Leadership Rally
I was honored to be invited to the PRSA Leadership Rally this year and I had a great time attending this event and meeting PRSA leaders across the country. I really gained a lot of valuable insight into the way PRSA works, PRSA board responsibilities and more.
I attended sessions about leadership, PRSA information and functions, PRSA International Conference, SEO for Chapters and social media for Chapters. All of the networking functions and dinners were great as well! It was great to see such established professionals I admire.
I got to speak to the PRSA attendees and Chapter Presidents about PRSSA initiatives and improving the relationships between our PRSSA Chapters and PRSA Chapters. I’m excited to see more growth there and I really want to see the PRSSA to PRSA transition rate improve as well.
Overall – two really great trips where I got to learn a lot more from other leaders and I’m really looking forward to things to come this year for both organizations!
