Redefining Success: Part 2

Following Redefining Success: Part 1 saying you are not a failure if you do not end up at one of the largest agencies, a well-known corporation or a fortune 500 company, here is part 2:

Screen Shot 2014-03-03 at 1.22.42 PMYou can’t be afraid of going after what you really want. You are defining your own success, career and life at this point and you should do what you want. It’s cliché, but do what you love. You don’t want to be stuck at a job you hate.

It’s fine to have the “stay at a job for one year rule” but why should you have to do that? Why should you be limited by “rules” set by others?

We have a short time to define ourselves. More than 1/3 of our day is spent at a job, in an office, working away. Don’t waste that time doing something you’re not proud of or doing something you don’t want to do.

It’s a fine line between gaining experience and figuring out what you want to do. It’s a hard process, trust me I know, but I’m happy to be out on this journey and hope it inspires one of you to take a leap to figure out what you love and what kind of job you want too!

The other side: if you are okay with your love and love your job GREAT! Go above and beyond your job though and find things you love outside your job. Take up painting, photography, volunteering, running or something else. Take some time AWAY from your job too. Don’t forget to actually live.

What do you think? What do you hope for this year?

10 Things to Know When Dating a Girl in PR

Just for fun and because Jarrett and I talk about our careers a lot, I asked him to write his thoughts about what it’s really like to date a girl in public relations. Here’s what he came up with (god bless him):

  1. Starbucks is your friend, just make sure you get the order right or you will be going back. Coffee in general makes everything better for her.
  2. Always be on time. There is a schedule for everything, including your arrival. The last thing you want to do is make changes to the schedule.
  3. While Starbucks is your friend in the morning till the afternoon, it’s time to switch to your next friend wine in the evenings!
  4. You are now with a Twitter and social media addict, if you use a hashtag wrong you will hear about it.
  5. Twitter Chats are something you will now know about. You will lose her to one of these at least once a month (or twice) and you should not bother her at all during these or suffer dire consequences. These are serious.
  6. Client crises are also very serious. When she gives you warning of this, stay clear and try to be as supportive as possible until is passes.
  7. If you do not answer your phone after 2 tries, then she will most likely assume the worst: that you have been hospitalized or are dead. Always answer texts and calls.
  8. Go ahead and start investing in Apple stock early on! You are always on team Apple. Droids are not okay.
  9. Know that it’s okay to ask her to put her phone down. Do this often!
  10. No matter what the difficulties are or how you may lose your girlfriend to technology, you will be considered one of the lucky ones if you are with a PR girl. They are caring, loving and the best catch!

I think he added the last to try to sweeten me up, but that’s okay! All of this is true for me!

I’ll also be writing a similar post on what it’s like to date a guy in broadcasting; it’s difficult as well.

What else would you add?
